We all need motivation in our lives. So we decided to try out best to give you the motivation that you need to some extend. So this zen motivational story is an attempt to achieve that goal of ours as SLVIKI. This is about the three laughing monks. Here is the motivational story.

Once upon a time, there lived three old monks in ancient China. Their names are unknown. That’s because they have never revealed their names to anybody. Simply, They are famous as the three laughing monks.

They always traveled together and did nothing else but laugh. They traveled to a village or town, then they went to the center of the village or town, then they stood there and started laughing.

People who lived and worked there and the passers-by noticed these three monks laughing in the middle of the town. They couldn’t resist and had to start laughing with the three monks. Little by little a small laughing crowd has formed. And eventually, the laughing had spread to the whole village or town.

At that moment these three old monks started traveling to the next village or town. Their laughter was their prayer. And it is the only thing they teach. They never spoke to anybody. They just created the laughing situation and moved on.

People all over China loved them and respected them. The people had never known such spiritual teachers before or after like these three monks. They taught people that life is something that should take as an opportunity to laugh. It’s like they discovered some kind of cosmic joke.

They traveled and laughed for many years. They spread joy and happiness throughout China. But one day, while they were in a village in the northern province, one of these three monks died.

People were shocked by this news and came running from far corners of the country, leaving the fields unattended for the day. They came only to witness the other two monks’ reaction to this dramatic event. People expect them to show sorrow or even cry. The whole village came to the place where three monks were.

Two alive and one dead. But the two monks laughed harder. They kept laughing and could not seem to stop. So, few among the people who came to see them approached them and asked them why they weren’t mourning for their deceased friend.

For the first time, the monks responded. They said, “Because yesterday, on our way to your village, he proposed a bet on who of us would beat the other two and die first. And now he won, the old rogue! He even had a testament prepared!”

According to tradition the dead must be washed, and change their clothes before putting the body on the funeral pyre. But the old monk explicitly asked to leave the old clothes on him. Because he had never been filthy for even a single day.

His testament stated, “I never allowed any of the filth of this world to reach me, through my laughter.”

So as he asked, the old monk’s body was placed on the pyre with the clothes he was wearing when he had died. Then the fire was lit, but when the fire touched the clothes, suddenly fireworks of hundreds of colors went exploding up and down and to all directions in the sky astonishing everyone.

Finally, people who had gathered there also joined the laughter of the two living monks.

You see in your life, maybe the only reason we are here on this earth is to keep laughing and never stop experiencing joy, laughter, and happiness. So next time you face a problem, stand in front of a mirror and keep laughing until the problem goes away. Because your joy is what makes you alive.
